UNIT 2 ISSUE 7 GO GIGANTES!!!!

Is Advertising Good for Society?

Its good and bad.... Depends on how it's used and the truth behind the message.
John Calfee pushes the issue that consumers make better decisions with advertising.
On the contraryDinyar Godrej makes his claim that advertising brings emotion and anxiety.

Again like all my other blogs I see both sides which one is right, I dont know.

YES: Advertising helps create new products to come and change society. He talks how health claims advertising has become a huge phenomenon. This is how people hear about new pills or viagra's which to me is misleading not all these meds are good for you or infor that advertisers put out. Look how the cigarette ads are they are very misleading and directed to certain people (youth) and ethnic backround.

When it all comes down to its $$$$$$$$!!!!!!

NO:
Hungry for cool explains it. advertising does portray lifestyles like it says in the book. Beyond what normal citizens can reach!! Ad industry's have made there way into tv shows billboards internet radio commericials, you name a form of medium and you will see ADS. No it cannot be good for us when its not going out there for the good of the people, truly isnt rarely i believe that ads are not good at some extent but its drilled into our lives now, its going to get worse. For example the publishers clearing house, you won $3123156156650561055 dollars in the mail, just call 1-800-liars. Very misleading and should be illegal along with all the other negative and misleading advertisments.

Are the Citizens better informed in the Information Society?

Hypothesis:

This exercise was to see how people are informed with news, media, and politics. The Governor’s election is a week away and I came up with a few questions to see how informed people are.  I asked a series of questions to a group of forty people to see what they exactly knew. Most of my questions were very basic and were answered by young, old, and different nationalities. My first sets of questions were too open ended so I came up with a new set of questions that were quick and easy.  My tentative insight feels that people are not going to be informed, as everyone should be.  This survey of forty people will give me an idea of how people use their time, how much truth do they know, and if they even are well informed. Throughout class we have discussed if society is well informed. In the book called Taking Sides
Alexander Hanson asks the reader if we are better informed in the information society? In the book two sides were proposed, yes and No.  In my survey you will see how people of all ages and races are informed.

Method:

After thinking how I can get a variety of answers and be efficient with my time, I realized I could email and use Face book to help. These are a few ways that I stay in loop with family and friends that are Internet ready. I was able to get most people to answer my six questions with various different answers. Below are my questions:
1. How informed are you on the Governor’s race? Rate yourself. 1 to 5

2. Do you know who is the former CEO of E-Bay?

A. Betsy Ross
B. Bill Gates
C. Meg Whitman
D. Steve Jobs
3. Do you know what specific vote both Governor candidates are going for?

A. Caucasian
B. African-American
C. Middle-Eastern
D. Latino

4. Who is the candidate opposed for Proposition 8?
A. Jerry Brown
B. Willie Brown
C. Meg Whitman
D. Lisa Leslie

5. A Governors term in office is how many years?
A. 4 Years
B. 2 Years
C. 3 Years
D. 1 Year

6. How much time do you spend on the Internet in one day?
A. 1 Hour
B. 3 Hours
C. 5 Hours

Result Summary:
After I tallied up everyone’s answer I came to realize everyone had vary different answers. For example, my first question with how informed are you on the 2010 Governor’s race? Most people are very “somewhat” informed; which took me to my last question, how much time do you spend on the Internet. Most people that spent more time on the Internet had answered more questions correctly. The people that spend the least amount did not answer questions correctly.  I think I should have narrowed down whom I asked the series of questions. Since I asked all kinds of different people I received various answers. I think if I would have kept it in a certain group I would have came with a more conclusive summary.  As for my question number five, it was close to even, some said three years in office and some said four years. Obviously four years is correct but I received all answers 4,3,2, and one year.  What most people did know what that Meg Whitman is the former CEO of E bay now is that because people use e bay a lot of because the media has pushed that one fact into mainstream over and over? Summarizing my information I see how media does effect how informed people are.

Conclusion:
After gathering and charting my answers I came to the conclusion that Citizen are better informed when they use mass media, not necessarily right but more informed in general. My answers were everywhere aside from question number two, most people knew about Meg Whitman and how she was the former CEO of E Bay. If I could do this again I would pick a certain age group with that I feel that I can become more conclusive with the hypothesis. I think it’s important that we have an informed citizenry however my answers were everywhere. I can say my group of forty people are mislead by media and has given me reason to believe that it effects the truth and the step towards a better society.  In order for our democracy to work it needs to inform the truth.  My survey gave me everything, which means we are not well informed and only through some media can we seek truth.

Are people better Informed in the information society ISSUE 18

Linda Jackson and Mark Bauerlein confuse me. which to pick or to agree on,  I do not know. I feel that the new technology and the new way we get new information. Its more efficient means however it can hurt more than help the new technology. we are in a world now where people get sucked into the internet TV  and very fake. The method that used on PG369.  in regards 140 children residing in the urban community. I do not agree with this book the stats are not correct for everyone. This brings in race and it drives me up the wall, when our gov't has set it up to be like this.
Needless to say the new technology is good but you need to know how to limit it and use it in a way where it will help you not hurt you!

10/5 INTERNATIONAL PRESS ONLINE 2HOURS

Ok. I read and listened to VOA news, Voice of America and BBC British Broadcasting Corporation.

I focused on an international story.  THE CHILEAN MINERS

On BBC
- Using the inverted pyramid, There are 33 miners that have been trapped for over 2 months?!? YES 2 freaking months and to think they are alive, WOW! crazy. on August 5th there was a rockfall north of the Chilean capital of Santiago on August 5. They had almost given up the search when rescuer's discovered 17 days later that all 33 are still alive. Using a "dove system" how to send messages they were able to tell the search crew to not give up hope. This coming weekend they plan on pulling out the 33 men crew out.
They have drilled over 1,500 of rock thus far. They just now have to line the tunnel because of the heat they have to be careful because it can become fatal.

VOA reports it almost the same but to me its a little more personal. They through in how family members of the trapped miners. However VOA was a lot shorter in writing.  I did not know that Chile is the worlds largest copper supplier.

VOA I personally like their perspective better, short and dry. just easier to read period. straight to the point. BBC went off on tangents, for example how the other miners that were not trapped started to protest about not getting paid since the incident. I thought was quite strange takes away from the importance of the topic.
BBC had a picture which VOA didnt which makes it more real

They both talked about the president hoping he can be their when the miners come up before 10/15 when he leaves the country.

This is a crazy story from both international news corps's reporting on international issues.

I wonder why we have not heard of it over here in the US, 2 months and 33 men are STILL alive?? that is just crazy!!!!
